INDIANAPOLIS, IN (November 14, 2008) — As part of the International CES Innovations 2009 Design and Engineering Awards program, the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA)® and Industrial Designers Society of America (IDSA) recently recognized the Energy® ESW-M6 mini subwoofer as being among the best designed and engineered products for 2009.

As a 2009 Innovations honoree in the home theater speakers category, the ESW-M6 was selected for this prestigious accolade by a preeminent panel of independent industrial designers, engineers and trade journalists. Evaluating products in 34 consumer electronics categories, the judges based their decisions on the following criteria: engineering qualities, aesthetic and design qualities, user value and novel features. 

An 8-inch cube, the ESW-M6 is a high-output design that features a 6.5-inch black anodized aluminum cone woofer and dual 6.5-inch passive radiators. These light, rigid cones provide tight bass response and dissipate both driver and amplifier heat. Much of the added performance comes from Energy’s Ribbed Elliptical Surrounds. This technology allows the drivers to perform with lower distortion and greater output, compared to the traditional half-roll surrounds that most subwoofers offer. The subwoofer also utilizes a new, efficient digital amplifier rated at 800 watts. A proprietary protection circuit prevents overdriving, which can cause distortion.

According to Energy product manager Ben Burko, the ESW-M6’s small size is deceptive: “Even with the incredibly compact size of the woofers and passive radiators, the deep bass sound from this sub is comparable to much larger units. Plus, it provides placement options that we’ve never offered before.” 

The furniture-grade high gloss black finish on the MDF cabinet comes from seven layers of polyurethane, each hand-sanded to achieve exceptional shine and durability. As a result, this subwoofer gives owners the option of placing them discreetly away from view, or proudly displaying their quality craftsmanship. 

The ESW-M6 also features line and sub inputs and a 50Hz–200Hz variable low-pass filter with bypass mode. A 0 to 360-degree variable phase control lets you integrate the subwoofer with other speakers. The “auto power” feature turns the subwoofer on or off automatically, based on the presence of bass signals in the soundtrack. 

Available through select specialty retail outlets, the ESW-M6 carries a U.S. MSRP of $600 each.

According to Energy product manager Ben Burko, the RC-Micro represents a real breakthrough: “Since its introduction, our Take Classic home theater system has been lauded for its performance and minimal size. With these new, smaller home audio speakers, center channel speaker and subwoofer, our engineers have delivered audiophile quality sound from our smallest enclosures yet.” 

Consisting of four matching speakers for front and surround sound channels, a center channel  for highly accurate dialogue and a small, but mighty, subwoofer for amazing bass response, all of the RC-Micro components feature sonically inert MDF cabinets with a high-gloss black lacquer finish. 

Standing just 4.7 inches high and weighing slightly over a pound, each RC-Micro SAT speaker has a .5-inch hyperbolic chambered aluminum dome tweeter and 2.5-inch high excursion aluminum cone micro-driver. Energy’s proprietary Convergent Source Module (CSM) technology (originally developed for the company’s flagship Veritas series) positions the woofer and tweeter in close proximity to one another to act as a single source, thereby increasing overall dispersion and reducing any lobing effect. Each of the components is housed in its own chamber, lowering resonance and allowing higher power handling, as well as eliminating unwanted interaction with each other. “The performance results can only be described as tantric,” added Burko. 

RC-Micro

Magnetic shielding on the small speakers (and center channel) prevents interference with standard CRT televisions. Offering amazing placement flexibility, the RC-Micro SATs feature a built-in keyhole slot and a ¼-inch-20 threaded insert for wall mounting. 

The RC-Micro Center speaker, which provides crisp dialogue and stunning audio effects, has a driver configuration identical to the satellites, ensuring that it is perfectly timbre matched with the rest of the home audio system to deliver incredible midrange accuracy and low distortion. According to Energy product manager Ben Burko, “This evolution of the Connoisseur series now incorporates many of the same technological advantages found in our flagship speakers. The line really exemplifies the key audio principles that Energy is known for: high quality materials; accurate, revealing sound and exceptional value.”  

The newest additions to the Connoisseur family include three tower speakers, the CF-70, CF-50 and CF-30; three bookshelves, the CB-20, CB10 and CB-5; the CC-10 and CC-5 center channels and the unique bipole/dipole surround sound speaker, the CR-10. All of these home audio speakers, except for the CR-10, feature a stunning black ash finish with high gloss black baffles that make them as attractive with their grilles on, as off. The surround sound speaker’s finish is all black ash. 

Perhaps the single biggest change to the series is the addition of the Convergent Source Module, or CSM. Found on Energy’s ultra-premium Veritas® speaker line, the CSM positions the hyperbolic aluminum dome tweeters (on all of the speakers) and midrange, or woofer (depending on the speaker) in a single unit. This arrangement provides wide dispersion with low distortion and amazing midrange performance. 

Adding to the Connoisseur line’s performance is the use of Energy’s Ribbed Elliptical Surrounds on the woofers. This technology allows the drivers to perform with lower distortion and greater output, compared to the traditional half-roll surrounds that most competitors offer. Additional benefits include increased excursion and larger piston area, allowing for greater efficiency. The multi-woofer models offer new tapered crossovers that decrease lobing to improve the speakers’ dispersion characteristics. Ported cabinets—on every model except the surround—also work to extend bass performance. 

The totally new CR-10 surround speaker incorporates a unique switchable bipole/dipole circuit that allows more complete adjustment to the room characteristics. A second tweeter, mounted on top of the speaker reflects the sound off of the ceiling, adding further flexibility to room placement. 

Placement options also abound for the bookshelf speakers and the CC-5 center channel; all of these speakers have threaded inserts. Gold plated 5-way binding posts ensure positive connections and the tower models offer the option of bi-wire or bi-amp connection with their dual post configuration. 

“Although the name hasn’t changed,” Burko noted, “the new Connoisseur series is anything but more of the same; this generation of speakers has been engineered to offer premium quality and real value.” 

Scheduled for a September release, the Energy Connoisseur speakers will be sold at the following U.S. MSRP pricing: CF-70, $500 each; CF-50, $400 each; CF-30, $300 each. The CB-20 bookshelf is priced at $350 per pair, the CB-10 at $250 per pair and the CB-5 is $180 per pair. The CC-10 center channel is $300, while the CC-5 is priced at $200. The smaller ESW-8 offers the same driver technology and design as the ESW-10, but instead utilizes an 8-inch woofer and generates 200 watts of output.
